TYNE PEDESTRIAN & CYCLIST TUNNELS LIFT REFURBISHMENT

News date: 07/10/2009

The Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) is at present undergoing a procurement process to appoint a contractor to modernise both lifts that operate within the pedestrian and cycle tunnels. Work on the lifts is expected to be complete by Spring 2010.

While the lift at the South end of the tunnel is out of use, the escalators at the Jarrow entrance are operating on extended hours to ensure that service continues.

Once work on the lifts is complete, TWITA will be forming its refurbishment plans for the rest of the Grade II-listed pedestrian and cycle tunnels for which there will continue to be no charge to users.
