There are three existing tunnels at our Tyne Tunnel site, each serving a different type of customer. A second vehicle tunnel is also being built under the River Tyne as part of the New Tyne Crossing project.
TT2 manages the vehicle, cycle and pedestrian tunnels and is overseeing construction of the new tunnel. The existing vehicle tunnel is a two-way road with a 30 mile per hour speed limit. Customers must pay a toll to use the vehicle tunnel.
The pedestrian and cycle tunnels run side by side and are located close to the vehicle tunnel. They are free to use at any time.
All three tunnels are open 24 hours a day and operate every day of the year. The tunnels are vital parts of the Tyne and Wear road network. The vehicle tunnel joins two parts of the A19 Trunk Road and the cycle tunnel links up with the Coast to Coast (C2C) Cycle Route.
The Tyne Tunnels exist to provide a crossing point under the River Tyne between North and South Tyneside. We are located between the historic towns of Wallsend and Jarrow.
