What is the New Tyne Crossing?

Tyne Tunnels

The existing vehicle Tyne Tunnel has been operating since 1967. It was designed for a daily traffic throughput of 24,000 vehicles. It is currently serving 38,000 customers per day during peak periods.

In order to meet growing customer demands the previous tunnel operator, the Tyne  and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) proposed the development of a second vehicle tunnel.

TWITA put forward a plan to the Secretary of State for Transport that would revitalise travel across the Tyne. This plan is known as the New Tyne Crossing Project.

The New Tyne Crossing Project comprises:

  • Construction of a second vehicle tunnel under the River Tyne
  • Full refurbishment of the existing vehicle tunnel
  • Redesigned southern interchange at the entrance to the existing vehicle tunnel
  • Development of a new tolls plaza on the new northern approach to the vehicle tunnel

TT2 was appointed in November 2007 as Concessionaire to design, build, part finance and operate the new vehicle tunnel and other developments associated with the New Tyne Crossing project, and to operate all Tyne Tunnels until 2037.

Traffic Management Plans

Tyne Tunnels

In order to enable the New Tyne Crossing to be built, it is necessary to implement some changes to the local road network. This plan indicates the changes that are required, which were introduced during June and July 2008, and may remain in place until the second vehicle tunnel is operational. Please note that the closure of the link road between the Northumberland Dock Road roundabout, known as 'Gregson's roundabout' at the bottom of the A187, and the Tyne Tunnel roundabout on the A19 will be permanent.
