As spring blossoms in Houghton le Spring, Down at the Farm is excited to announce that this year marks its best lambing season ever. With a record number of adorable lambs joining the farm family, staff have been busy around the clock tending to the many ewes that call this vibrant working farm home.
Since opening its doors in 2007, Down at the Farm has welcomed visitors to experience the joys of farm life. The farm features a variety of animals, including the Texel sheep, which play a significant role in the farm’s operations and showcase the essence of rural life.
Farmer William Weightman shares his enthusiasm for the season, noting, “Spring is a massive part of our farming calendar. We are delighted with this year’s offspring. We have had lots of twin lambs and triplets too! When an ewe has more than one lamb, it can take too much energy from the mother, so we usually take the others to bottle feed. This is why we have more lambs to feed this year due to the higher number of twins and triplets.
“We are looking forward to opening our doors to visitors again where they can help us bottle feed them all – as you can imagine, it’s quite a lot of work, so extra hands are useful!”
Their team is eagerly preparing for their busiest season, inviting visitors to celebrate the arrival of spring with countless activities. Guests will have the chance to bottle feed the adorable lambs, cuddle fluffy baby rabbits, and enjoy tractor rides to meet the cows and calves. For the young and young at heart, the farm features 20 acres of outdoor play, including the ever-popular bouncy pillows!
Down at the Farm is open every weekend and during school holidays from Saturday, March 29th to October 31st, 2025. Additionally, the farm opens its gates every day during the Easter holidays from April 12th to April 27th, 2025. Visitors can check specific opening times on the website. Last entry is an hour before closing, and tickets can be booked online or purchased at the admissions desk.
