The ongoing weekend maintenance works on the Northbound Tyne Tunnel will be extended until Summer 2025.
A spokesperson for TT2 stated, “As is common with large-scale infrastructure projects, timescales may shift to accommodate the range of factors involved in such complex works. We want to assure our customers that this extended work is vital for ensuring the tunnel continues to provide a safe, reliable, and efficient route, as is expected from any critical piece of travel infrastructure.”
Maintenance will continue over the weekends when tunnel traffic is approximately half of weekday levels, minimising disruption, particularly while regional transport challenges are ongoing.
The spokesperson further commented, “We understand the inconvenience this may cause for weekend travellers and encourage drivers to plan ahead and avoid peak travel times. Your patience and understanding during this period are greatly appreciated, and we remain committed to keeping disruptions to a minimum.”
We are working closely with the main contractor to ensure the work is completed as soon as possible, the safety and quality of the tunnels remain our top priorities. Both tunnels will continue to operate as normal Monday to Friday.
We are grateful for your patience and understanding as the work continues. We will keep you updated with any further developments.
